Christ Follower Core Values

Below is an example of my personal core values. In 2010 I attended a class that assisted us in developing values. The values can be written as values for an individual, a business leader, or together as a couple. As you bring your own together it is best to pray as you go. Once they are finished review them once per week to see how you are doing.

My Core Values (Development)

1- I will Love God Totally- Love Others as myself.
Foundational Scripture-  (Key Verse)
Matthew 22:37-40; Jesus replied, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: “love your neighbor as yourself. All the other commandments and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”

Descriptive paragraph of what this value means to me.
In order to live life according to God’s plan for my life, this reminds me I must keep God as the foundation. This is with my whole being, not only part of me. Only then, can I love others according to how God loves them.  There are times I can turn this upside down, others, first then God.

Identify practices that will develop my life in each area.
·         Begin my day in pray and a short devotion, use a study or scripture that places my heart, soul and mind on God totally.
·         Meditate on the scripture and what the Holy Spirit shows me.
·         In prayer, ask the Lord to make me aware of those that I am not showing love to who are around me. (Present)

2- I will submit to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and seek to live my life in the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.

Foundational Scripture- (Key Verses)
(1)John 16:13-15; When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not be presenting his own ideas; he will be telling you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring me glory by revealing to you whatever he receives from me.  All that the Father has is mine; this is what I mean when I say that the Spirit will reveal to you whatever he receives from me.
(2) Acts 1:4-5; In one of these meetings as he was eating a meal with the, he told them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you what he promised. Remember, I have told you about this before. John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.
(3) Acts 1:8; But when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, you will receive power and will tell people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

Descriptive paragraph of what this value means to me.
This value is very important to me. It takes away my desire to do things my way. If I submit to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and listen to his voice I am living my life on the path that God desires me to live it on. In living my life in the power of the Holy Spirit I am able to carry out those things he leads me to that otherwise I would be carrying out in the flesh. This is my guard against confusion.

Identify practices that will develop my life in each area.
·         Pray and listen to what the Holy Spirit is leading me to on a specific subject.
·         Listen to wise Christian preachers/teachers who are mature on this topic.
·         Admit to God and to a close friend that I cannot do what God is calling me to do without the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. (Humble thyself before the Lord)
·         Involve a trusted friend in prayer on what God is calling me to submit to.
·         Always line up the guidance I receive with scripture.

3- I will honor God with my words and let my yes be yes, and my no be no.
Foundational Scripture  (Key Verse)
Matthew 5:37; Just say a simple, “Yes, I will,” or “No, I won’t.” Your word is enough. To strengthen your promise with a vow shows that something is wrong.”
Descriptive paragraph of what this value means to me.
This assists me in guarding against justification and explanation of why I am answering, yes or no. My mind is made up according to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and I will stand on my answer.
Identify practices that will develop my life in each area.
·         When someone comes to me with a request, resist the urge to immediately say yes.
·         Remind myself that all requests do not require an immediate answer.

4- I will guard the unity of the believers (Psalm 133)
Foundational Scripture (Key Verses)
Psalm 133
Romans 15:5; May God, who gives this patience and encouragement, help you live in complete harmony with each other---each with the attitude of Christ Jesus toward the other. Result- v.6, Then all of you can join together with one voice, giving praise and glory to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Descriptive paragraph of what this value means to me.
As in all believers I have the potential to cause division within the body of Christ. This value reminds me of the importance of this. Psalm 133 reminds me that the benefit of this is, we will be blessed. 133:3 b, And the Lord has pronounced his blessing, even life forevermore. This value also reminds me that the blessing of unity is for today, not only for Old Testament times.

5- I will be faithful in sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ in my daily life and location in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Foundational Scripture (Key Verse)
Acts 1:8; But when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, you will receive power and will tell people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
Descriptive paragraph of what this value means to me.
This reminds me that it is important for me to live in today and pay attention to who God places around me today. It’s not a future tense thing, but as in the Greek, an aorist participle, meaning now, a point in time.

Practices I desire to develop the most

2- I will submit to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and seek to live my life in the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. (John 16:13-15, Acts 1:4-5)

4- I will guard the unity of the believers (Psalm 133, Romans 15:5)
