Years ago I was in a conversation with a couple of Christian leaders, who had years more experience than me. Somehow we landed on the topic of equipping and training. I remember asking this question, but doesn’t Ephesians 4:11-13 tell us that we are to equip the body of Christ when we serve as Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastor’s and Teachers. In this conversation, one walked away angrily and said, “Fine, I guess I will equip and train people.” The second said, “I will not equip and train anyone that is not what I was hired for!”
A few days ago, I came across an online post by Glenn Burris, President of the Foursquare Church that fits well with this topic.
Reflections: "We want a King over us who will go out before us and fight our battles". Interesting that Israel's motivation was an abdication of their responsibilities. God warned them that they would regret their decision. Ultimately leaders should build a legacy of producing other leaders not a legacy of building a personal kingdom. Saul actually started out as a good man, commissioned by Samuel to lead and anointed with a prophetic gift. But all of that came crashing down as this leader attempted to please man not God. We can never allow the expectations of others to cause us to compromise our call. We must challenge a culture of dependency and foster a culture of interdependence. Above all, we must lead people into an absolute dependence on the Lord. Only then can we fully experience the blessings, plans and purposes of God.
From Nancy; 4:11-13; He is the one who gave these gifts to the church, the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ, until we come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature and full grown in the Lord, measuring up to the full stature of Christ. New Living Translation
As for me I believe equipping and training does not mean. I am to step aside and do nothing, but instead as long as I have breathe in my body, as a leader I am to equip and train others. In today’s world this may mean standing in front of the body of Christ on a Sunday morning, one on one mentoring, small groups, classrooms, or various avenues through writing online or videos. A reminder to others and myself; In case someone is trying to wiggle out of the word equipping that is used in the New Living Translation. The word equipping is also used in the Greek translation.
Note: Permission given by Glenn Burris, President of, The Foursquare Church to include his reflections.
